DuMont Family
A family grounded by books.
"We are a family grounded by books. While browsing the Airdrie Public Library’s aisles in person, we all found books to spark our curiosity and develop our skills and knowledge. We found picture books and biographies to read together to help us understand the world around us and the people who made, and are making, a difference. When I became ill in 2023, I found books on my disease, books to help me parent with my limited mobility, and books to bring a smile to my face through the worst of my symptoms. The library not only brings in countless books for my requests on the TRAC app, but also checks them out for me so my caregivers can pick them up when I am too ill to come in person.
The Airdrie Public Library has been such a special place for me throughout my life. As a youngster, I made a friend at the library who later became my bridesmaid and continues to be a dear friend to this day. As a new mom, I connected with other parents going through the same things as me during the Songs and Rhymes programming. I was so happy to share my knowledge of the honeybees for the “Full STEAM Ahead” programming. My sons have also enjoyed the Lego club and DND club programming. As our family looks ahead at the new library with excitement, we are eager to find cozy spots to quietly read, playful areas to share books and connect with others, space for more books for us to browse and discover what sparks our curiosity"

"The Library is My Second Home"
"My family moved to Airdrie just over 10 years ago in the hopes of being able to provide better opportunities for me. I was very young and could not understand the move. I wanted to move back. I wanted to be in the home I knew and I wanted my old friends. Alberta was a massive change. There were no beaches and my grandpa couldn’t just drive over and take me to places. I was bored and felt alone until my mom took me to the library. Visiting the library changed everything. I was an early reader and books excited me! Having the ability to read and participate in the library programs, and meet kids my age made me forget how lonely I was.
Whenever I got home from the library, I was ready to read. That love for reading developed over the years and the library is now one of my favourite places to visit. I have grown up going to the library and taking part in the programs. When I got too old to participate in the summer reading program, I decided that I would volunteer for it. Being a volunteer at the library for over a year has been the highlight of my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to say I belong to the library’s growing volunteering team."

"The library has turned into the web that connects me with my loved ones."
Throughout my entire life, the library has always been a staple. Some of my earliest memories are of my late grandfather taking me to the library to rent DVDs to watch. That was part of how we bonded, sitting in the coolness of his basement and watching whatever tape we had rented while we worked away at a jigsaw puzzle. They are some of my fondest memories, and I have the library to thank for them. Other relationships have been fostered through the library as well. I am able to provide more book recommendations to my grandmother because of the accessibility of the library’s materials. I’ve created lifelong memories with friends attending various events. The library has turned into the web that connects me with my loved ones.
Even as a volunteer I have felt that connection to other people, helping others enjoy the library as much as I have. If I had to guess, I would say I’m far from a unique case in feeling this way. After all, I’ve seen the joy on people’s faces during certain programs. People having fun with friends in a town that can tend to lack in activities, especially for youths. No matter how one uses the library, there is an opportunity for connection, which has become extremely valuable. In a society where third spaces are becoming rarer and rarer, the library stands out as a welcome beacon of community.

"The library is important to me and the community."
Theresa began working at the library in 2000. The library was a much smaller space with only 10 people on staff. She was responsible for preschool and school aged programing, including the summer reading program. In 2006, the library moved into it's current location which allowed for APL to add more programs and resources.

"For me the library represents a place where people of all ages and different walks of life are encouraged to find things they're interested in, and explore."
As a high school student, Oliver frequently utilizes the library as a study space. He recalls completing an advanced biology course over the summer, dedicating much of his time to focused study within its walls. Volunteering at the library has also contributed to his personal growth, providing him with valuable work experience.
Oliver believe that learning and reading are fundamental human traits that can unite people, regardless of their backgrounds.
He views the library as a welcoming space for individuals of all ages to explore their interests and connect with others. “For me the library represents a place where people of all ages and different walks of life are encouraged to find things they're interested in and explore. The library really helps to foster that encouragement of learning and “finding your people” in a community and makes it easier to feel like you belong.”
